Purpose

The research network’s objectives are as follows:

  • Strengthen networking by creating a directory of North American experts in the field;
  • Organize an annual workshop, in person or online, to foster scientific exchanges and collaborations;
  • Establish democratic governance, with the election of a scientific committee during annual meetings;
  • Structure the network through the adoption of a constitution for official recognition by ISUF.

Our specific research program involves studying:

  • The process of formation and transformation of North American built environments, including urban forms, urban developments, suburban and rural patterns;
  • The notion of grids, patterns, and general layouts of the different fabrics found in North America;
  • The common elements that could be defined as the DNA of the built environments of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Through these actions, the NAUMN aims to create bridges between disciplines (architecture, urban planning, urban design, geography, heritage, etc.), stimulate collaborative research and include its activity in an annual tradition of events organized across North America
